Paseando por el puerto de Punta Umbría

Debido a la inexistencia de una vía de comunicación terrestre hasta inicios del siglo XX, las primeras infraestructuras portuarias en Punta Umbría, en el margen occidental de la desembocadura del Odiel, fueron construidas para facilitar el tráfico marítimo fluvial de pasajeros y mercancías, siendo impulsadas por una colonia de veraneantes ingleses que, procedentes de la Compañía Minera de Río Tinto, se había establecido en la zona desde 1881. Así vio la luz el “muelle viejo o de los ingleses”, que permaneció sobre la ría hasta pasado el ecuador del siglo XX. El incremento de la flota de pesca a lo largo del siglo XX impulsó la necesidad de ampliar el recinto portuario para dotarlo de funcionalidad pes- quera, favoreciendo así la construcción del puerto de Punta Umbría.

Due to the lack of terrestrial communication until the early twentieth century, the first port facilities in Punta Umbria, on the western bank of the mouth of the Odiel, were built to facilitate river maritime passenger traffic and freight, being driven by a colony of British holidaymakers, from Compania Minera Rio Tinto had settled in the area since 1881. Thus was born the "old dock or the English" which remained on the river until past century Ecuador XX. The increase of the fishing fleet throughout the twentieth century prompted the need to expand the port area to provide it with fishing functionality, thus promoting the construction of the port of Punta Umbria.
