Una mañana en Oporto

El río Duero es atravesado por varios puentes a su paso por Oporto. El más famoso de ellos es el Puente Don Luis I (Ponte Dom Luís I en portugués), que une la ciudad con Vila Nova de Gaia. Inaugurado a finales del siglo XIX, este puente de hierro es una de las imágenes más emblemáticas de Oporto.
Durante el siglo XIX, la ciudad de Oporto había experimentado un rápido crecimiento comercial que obligaba a mejorar las comunicaciones entre Miragaia, el barrio de pescadores de la orilla de Oporto, y Vila Nova da Gaia al otro lado del Duero.
Así, a comienzo de siglo se había puesto en marcha un puente hecho de barcas unidas por cables metálicos, que solucionaba temporalmente el problema pero no era viable a largo plazo.
De este modo, en 1879 el ayuntamiento de la ciudad decretó la construcción de un puente metálico sobre el Duero, que sería inaugurado finalmente en octubre de 1886.

The Douro River is crossed by several bridges to its passage through Oporto. The most famous of them is the Don Luis I bridge (Ponte Dom Luís I in Portuguese), which links the city with Vila Nova de Gaia. This iron bridge, opened at the end of the 19th century, is one of the most emblematic images of Porto.
During the 19th century, the city of Oporto had undergone rapid commercial growth that forced to improve communications between Miragaia, the fishermen's neighbourhood of the shore of Porto, and Vila Nova da Gaia on the other side of the Douro.
Thus, at beginning of the century had been launched a bridge made of boats linked by ropes, which temporarily solved the problem but was not viable in the long term.
Thus, in 1879 the City Hall decreed the construction of a metal bridge over the Douro, which would finally opened in October 1886.
