El Castillo de la Concepción es el mejor punto de partida para conocer la ciudad y adquirir una visión general de los 3.000 años de historia: la Cartagena púnica fundada hacia el año 229 a.C. por el general Asdrúbal; la riqueza minera que atrajo años más tarde a los romanos convirtiéndola en una de las colonias más importantes de la Hispania romana; la toma por los árabes y la conquista para Castilla por Alfonso X en 1245; el esplendor militar del siglo XVIII al convertirse en el Departamento Marítimo del Mediterráneo; y el siglo XIX, cuando Cartagena vive una de sus épocas de esplendor gracias a la industrialización y al importante tráfico de su puerto.
