El edificio de la ermita fue construido a comienzos del siglo XVII, lo mismo que los edificios circundantes; formada por casa de santero, albergues, patio anterior, con fuentes y arboledas.
El interior de la ermita es de grandes proporciones, con retablo barroco y camarín en el que se asienta la imagen de la patrona.
La aparición de la virgen data de los años de la reconquista en tiempos del rey Alfonso VI, cuando un pastor encontró una talla de la virgen en un madroño, edificándose la ermita en el lugar exacto de la aparición. La ermita de Nuestra Señora del Madroñal está situada en un lugar privilegiado.
