It is one of the most iconic and most visited of Agres and possibly of the entire region. The influx of people to this environment is counted by thousands weekly, both because of its religious importance and natural surroundings, since is situated inside same the sierra Mariola and its natural park.
*
The tradition tells that the last day of August in the year 1484, the parish of Santa Maria de Alicante burned completely, and that the image of the Virgin disappeared.
*
The next morning, in Agres became a major event, "The coming of the Virgin".
*
According to the story, a pastor, Tomas Gaspar, was that found the Virgin, on top of a Hackberry in the ruins of the Moorish Castle.
*
There was where the Virgin gave the pastor arm missing. This will be a test to the people of the apparition of the Virgin.
*
The image was conveyed to the Church, but the next day it was gone. And it is found again in the place where appeared. For this reason, they interpreted that the desire of the Virgin was to be venerated at that same place building was originally a humble Chapel.
*
The Foundation of the convent of the Madonna of the castle of Agres, thanks to the influx of devotees of the Virgin was authorized at the end of the year 1577. The following year work began, and ended up being inhabited by Franciscan religious until the second half of the 20th century.

The primitive chapel was enlarged. A church of a very simple single nave with Renaissance style was built. The practice of poverty was the central point of the religious, hence the simplicity of the building since it has never been of great architectural proportions. In their first season highlighted by his modesty and austerity. The main income of the House came from the alms and offerings of the faithful. In times of collection of fruits, the religious asked what was collected only in the towns of Agres and Alfafara. But such was the recognition and assistance that was made to the sanctuary of the Virgin, at the request of the King Felipe II, Pope Sixto V granted in the year 1586 a Papal Bull which granted the grace of begging by all the kingdoms of Spain. Concession which was confirmed by Benedigto 14th in another bull to the year 1756. The religious to take charge of the sanctuary of the Virgin, aimed at special cultural animation.
*
The distances that separated the villages from where came the pilgrims from the shrine made it impossible that a day be made the trip. That the faithful had to overnight in the sanctuary, disturbing the peace of the religious. This gave rise to consider the construction of a building performance of lodging (independent of the convent). The building that we can even contemplate its ruins, today was built in the year 1649, and was in use until the end of the Secularization of 1835. He was then to deteriorate until the beginning of the 80's when the last reforms, were both on the inside and on the roof of the building.

The importance of this place is determined above all by the great influx of pilgrims and visitors you receive throughout the year. However, when more visits are carried out is during the month of September, mainly why are parties to the Virgin, and from these, every Sunday of the month held the pilgrimages to the Virgin.
