Teatro Romano de Gartagena


El teatro de Cartagena es un teatro de época romana, construido entre los años 5 y 1 a. C. en la ciudad de Carthago Nova, actual Cartagena. Tenía capacidad para unos 7000 espectadores, y estuvo en uso hasta el siglo III, a partir del cual se superpusieron varias edificaciones. En 1988 fue descubierto por el arqueólogo de la Universidad de Murcia Sebastián Ramallo Asensio y las excavaciones dirigidas por él lograron exhumarlo para poder ser visitado en el marco del Museo del Teatro Romano. El 21 de enero de 1999 fue declarado Bien de Interés Cultural en la categoría de monumento.
Fue construido en tiempos del emperador Augusto. En 44 a. C. la ciudad había sido elevada al rango de colonia romana, bajo el título de Colonia Vrbs Iulia Nova Carthago (C.V.I.N.C), y poco después, el emperador Augusto se lanzó a un ambicioso plan de romanización y urbanización de la ciudad.

The theater of Cartagena is a Roman theater, built between the years 5 and 1 a. C. in the city of Carthago Nova, present Cartagena. It had capacity for about 7000 spectators, and was in use until the third century, from which several buildings were superimposed. In 1988 was discovered by the archaeologist of the University of Murcia Sebastián Ramallo Asensio and the excavations directed by him managed to exhume it to be visited in the framework of the Museum of the Roman Theater. On January 21, 1999, it was declared of Cultural Interest in the monument category.
It was built in the time of Emperor Augustus. 44 a. The city had been elevated to the rank of Roman colony, under the title of Vrbs Iulia Nova Carthago (C.V.I.N.C), and shortly after, the emperor Augustus launched an ambitious plan of romanization and urbanization of the city.
