La historia de Tabernas se remonta a época romana y musulmana, siendo una importante vía de paso entre las provincias de Almería y Murcia. Fue cabeza de una de las demarcaciones territoriales realizadas por los árabes. Los Reyes Católicos la integraron a sus dominios en el año 1489 a través de un pacto, por lo que no sufrió destrozos. En el siglo XVII empezó a perder influencia, y con la guerra de la Independencia se destruyeron muchas de sus estructuras.

La planta del castillo de Tabernas se adapta a las irregularidades del terreno. Entre sus elementos defensivos más característicos se encuentran sus seis torres, de las que hoy día aún quedan algunos restos. Tres de ellas eran macizas y las otras restantes no. El interior del edificio se dividía en dos partes a través de un ancho muro, en cuyo centro se encontraba una torre de forma circular que es la que se considera torre del Homenaje. Una de las partes del recinto sirvió de lugar de residencia y la otra se utilizó para aspectos militares. Poseía unas dependencias subterráneas que servía para almacenar los cereales y otro tipo de usos.

One of the parts of the enclosure served as a place of residence and the other was used for military aspects. It had underground dependencies that served to store cereals and other uses.
